Social media is a conversation, not just a show on a stage

Even before you have very many followers or people leaving comments for you, you can engage with other content creators in your niche.

Now that you've explored your niche and followed all the big names and content creators that are doing something similar to what you want to do, you're ready to start engaging with them.

A good rule of thumb when you're starting out is to engage daily (or a few times a week):

Like 5 posts: Find and like 5 posts from accounts within your niche or target audience.
Comment on 3 posts: Leave thoughtful, genuine comments on 3 of those posts to show more engagement.
Follow 1 new account: Follow 1 new account that aligns with your interests or goals.

Before you're getting comments to respond to on your own channel, you need to engage proactively by becoming part of the conversation on other people's channels in your niche.

Types of comments that are good at sparking conversation

The comments most likely to spark conversation are ones that add value, ask questions, or invite further interaction. The goal is to move beyond generic reactions and give the poster (and other viewers) a reason to respond or engage. Try these types of comments:

1. Insightful or Value-Added Comments

Offer a new perspective, tip, or resource related to the post.
Show that you genuinely understand the topic.
Example: “I love this tip about batch content creation! I also found that batching captions saves even more time. Have you tried that?”

2. Questions That Invite Discussion

Open-ended questions encourage the creator or audience to respond.
Avoid yes/no questions unless they naturally lead to elaboration.
Example: “This strategy is interesting—how do you balance engagement vs. content volume in a busy schedule?”

3. Relatable Stories or Experiences

Share a short personal anecdote that connects to the post.
This encourages empathy and shared experience.
Example: “I tried this scheduling method last month and noticed my engagement doubled! Did you see similar results?”

4. Constructive Feedback or Suggestions

Offer ideas politely, especially if you can enhance or expand on the post.
Example: “I love this design tip! I’ve also noticed that using contrasting colors for headings grabs even more attention.”

5. Humor or Playfulness (When Appropriate)

Light, clever comments can prompt replies if they fit the post’s tone.
Example: “This post is basically my social media life in one sentence—any tips for surviving Monday scrolls?”

Quick tips for comments that spark conversation:

Keep them specific and relevant to the post.
Avoid generic praise like “Great post!” without context.
Make it easy for the creator to respond.
Match the tone and style of the original post.
